THE National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the commencement of the digital registration of births, deaths and vital statistics through the new VitalReg platform.
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday in Asaba, the Federal Commissioner representing Delta, Mrs Blessyn Brume-Ataguba, described the initiative as a historic milestone that would strengthen the state’s civil registration system.
Brume-Ataguba said the initiative would provide accurate information for planning, governance and sustainable development across the state.
She said the digital platform represents a major transformation in capturing, storing and accessing vital records, adding that it would improve data security, accuracy, accessibility and overall service delivery.
“Today’s announcement marks the next critical step in building a modern, efficient, credible and technologically driven civil registration system that meets international standards,” Brume-Ataguba stated.
The commissioner explained that reliable civil registration remains indispensable because government decisions depend on accurate statistics for policy formulation, equitable resource allocation and sustainable development across communities and economic sectors.
Brume-Ataguba noted that incomplete registration of births, deaths and other vital events has created information gaps, making dependable demographic data unavailable for effective planning at national and state levels.
She said the introduction of VitalReg would bridge existing gaps by providing a secure digital platform through which residents could conveniently access registration services with greater efficiency across the State.
“The platform will strengthen data integrity, improve service delivery and guarantee that vital information needed for development is captured accurately and securely,” the commissioner added.
Brume-Ataguba disclosed that the commission has continued expanding registration access through partnerships with local authorities, healthcare institutions and other stakeholders to reach more communities across Delta State.
According to her, bringing registration services closer to residents will encourage participation, reduce registration challenges and ensure more citizens benefit from a reliable, accessible and efficient civil registration process.
She emphasised that the digital innovation would reduce paperwork, shorten waiting periods, improve online access and create a stronger database capable of supporting government programmes and evidence-based policy implementation.
The commissioner stated that the VitalReg platform was developed to integrate securely with government institutions, enhance digital identity management and improve coordination among agencies responsible for public service delivery.
Brume-Ataguba stressed that collaboration remains critical to the initiative’s success, urging local governments, community leaders and development partners to support effective civil registration throughout the state.
She also launched activities marking the 2026 World Population Day celebration in Delta, focusing attention on the hopes and aspirations of young people.
Speaking on the 2026 World Population Day theme, “Realising the Hopes and Aspirations of Young People: Today and for the Future,” Brume-Ataguba said ”it underscores the importance of creating opportunities for young Nigerians through education, innovation, entrepreneurship, healthcare and meaningful societal participation.
“The future of every nation is shaped not only by population size, but by the opportunities available to its people, especially young people,” she said.
The commissioner noted that Delta’s youthful population presents enormous opportunities for economic growth, technological advancement and social transformation when supported through deliberate investments and inclusive government policies.
She stressed that population benefits are not automatic, explaining that governments and stakeholders must work together to develop young people and unlock their full potential for national development.
Brume-Ataguba called for greater inclusion of youths in decision-making processes, saying their ideas, experiences and aspirations should shape programmes addressing their needs and future opportunities.
She appreciated the State government, development partners, traditional rulers, religious organisations, healthcare workers and the media for supporting civil registration efforts and promoting public awareness across communities.
The commissioner expressed confidence that stronger collaboration would establish a credible registration system that protects citizens’ identities and provides reliable information for sustainable development planning and informed governance.
Also speaking, the State Director of the commission, Mr Anthony Uwaechue, said national growth depends on stable, accurate and reliable data to support effective planning, policy formulation and sustainable development.
