Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has warned President Bola Tinubu against allowing the rigging of the August 15 governorship election in the state, cautioning that doing so could trigger political violence reminiscent of 1983.
Addressing party supporters at Orita-Sabo in Olorunda Local Government Area of the state on Monday, the governor said the President must live up to his responsibility of protecting the people from police harassment.
He alleged that the President was watching without concern as political crisis unfolded in Osun at the hands of his party chieftains, despite the fact that the Accord party had endorsed him as its 2027 presidential candidate.
Adeleke stressed that as Chief Security Officer of Osun State, he expected the President, being a Yoruba man in Yoruba land, to take note of the situation, noting that some APC chieftains were fuelling political violence while Tinubu looked away.
He said all that was being demanded was a free and fair election, warning that any attempt to do otherwise could reignite the kind of political crisis witnessed in 1983, when attempts were made to rig Chief Michael Ajasin out of power in the old Ondo State.
He urged the President to call his party members and police chiefs to order, insisting that he remains the substantive governor of Osun State.
He further noted that with Accord having already endorsed Tinubu as its candidate, there was no reason for the crisis to persist, appealing to him to protect the democracy he had once fought for and not allow his associates to undermine it.
He called on the President to wake up to his responsibilities and put a stop to what he described as the ongoing shenanigans in Osun State.
Earlier, the Director-General of the Imole Campaign Council, Senator Lere Oyewumi, urged residents to troop out en masse to vote for the party as the only way to return Adeleke to office.
He said the governor’s track record was reason enough for the people to re-elect him, and called on the electorate to vote and safeguard their votes on election day.
