Windstorm has claimed 7 lives and left 53 people injured in Jigawa state, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed.
Executive secretary of SEMA, Alhaji Hannafi Yakubu Fagam, gave the figures on Wednesday while briefing newsmen in his office at the state secretariat, Dutse.
Alhaji Fagam said the disaster affected 5,403 households across 120 communities in 13 local government areas.
He gave a breakdown of the fatalities to be 4 deaths in Dutse local government, while Miga, Ringim, and Sule-Tankarkar local government areas recorded one death each.
The windstorm also caused extensive damage to public infrastructure, as SEMA reported that over 47 primary and secondary schools, 3 hospitals and 2 police stations were destroyed, alongside other properties.
Fagam described the incident as a natural disaster and added that the present administration has already approved funds for intervention and relief support to victims across the state.
The affected LGAs are Dutse, Miga, Gwaram, Birnin Kudu, Ringim, Kiyawa, Babura, Kiri-Kasamma, Buji, Kaugama, Gumel, Gagarawa, and Sule-Tankarkar.
