French authorities have called on football supporters to remain calm and celebrate responsibly ahead of the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Morocco.
The appeal comes as security agencies prepare for Thursday night’s highly anticipated encounter, following previous major football matches that were accompanied by incidents of unrest in parts of France.
Authorities tighten security measures
Sports Minister Marina Ferrari urged fans to ensure the occasion remains a celebration rather than an opportunity for disorder.
She appealed for responsible behaviour from supporters as thousands are expected to gather to watch the match.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez also warned that authorities would take action against any form of misconduct, stressing that public disorder would not be tolerated during or after the game.
Historic ties add significance to fixture
The quarter-final carries added significance because of the long-standing historical and cultural ties between France and Morocco.
Morocco gained independence from France in 1956, while France is home to a large Moroccan community, including many French citizens of Moroccan heritage.
Several players in Morocco’s squad were born in France and have represented French clubs during their careers.
Team captain Achraf Hakimi, who was born in Spain, currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain.
Focus remains on football
France and Morocco previously met in the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with celebrations largely remaining peaceful.
Authorities are hoping for a similar atmosphere as both teams battle for a place in the tournament’s semi-finals.
Security personnel are expected to remain on high alert throughout the fixture to maintain public safety.
