The fate of hundreds of residents living in a shanty settlement in Abuja’s Kukwaba District hangs in the balance after the Federal Capital Territory Administration ordered the immediate demolition of the community over allegations that it had become a hideout for criminal elements.
The demolition order was issued after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike led security personnel to inspect the settlement near City Gate shortly after a high-level security meeting.
During the visit on Friday, Wike directed the immediate demolition of the settlement, insisting that the FCT Administration would not tolerate any location serving as a sanctuary for criminal elements.
He alleged that criminals often retreat to the community after carrying out attacks across Abuja, stressing that protecting residents and restoring public safety remain top priorities of his administration.
To execute the order, the minister directed FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi to collaborate directly with the Department of Development Control to clear the area promptly.
The minister said the government would continue dismantling criminal hideouts, strengthening intelligence-led security operations and taking decisive measures to make the Federal Capital Territory safer for residents, businesses and
visitors.
The demolition is expected to displace occupants of the settlement as authorities move to clear the area in line with the minister’s directive.
