The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Jos has condemned the alleged mob killing of one of its students, Ibrahim Mbaye, describing the incident as jungle justice and calling for a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The union expressed sadness over Mbaye’s death and urged members of the university community to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands and allow security agencies to conduct their investigations in line with due process.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the SUG President, Younglan Tongpus, Mbaye was allegedly accused of stealing mobile phones before he was attacked by a mob.
The student reportedly sustained serious injuries during the assault and was taken to the hospital for treatment but later died in the early hours of Tuesday.
The SUG said no allegation, regardless of its nature, could justify jungle justice, stressing that every individual deserves fair treatment and the opportunity to defend themselves under the law.
It warned that mob violence undermines justice, threatens public safety and goes against the values the university community stands for.
The union disclosed that some individuals allegedly linked to the assault had been arrested by the police, while investigations into the incident were ongoing.
It expressed confidence that security agencies would carry out a thorough and impartial investigation, urging all parties to allow justice to take its course.
The students’ body also advised members of the university community against spreading unverified information or engaging in retaliatory actions, stressing that anyone suspected of committing an offence should be reported to the appropriate authorities for proper investigation.
The SUG extended its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, while reaffirming its commitment to promoting peace, justice, the rule of law and the safety of students within the University of Jos community.
