The family of Ibrahim Mbaya, a University of Jos graduate who allegedly died after being attacked by a mob in Plateau State, has announced that he will be buried on Thursday in his hometown in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State.
His younger brother, James Mbaya, confirmed the burial arrangements, saying the family was preparing to transport the 25-year-old’s remains home for interment.
He described Ibrahim’s death as a painful loss, adding that the tragedy had left their parents devastated.
According to James, Ibrahim was the first child and first son of the family, with aspirations that included establishing a fashion brand and a restaurant. He also described his late brother as a model, dancer and entrepreneur whose ambitions were cut short by the incident.
The family appealed to the authorities to ensure that everyone found responsible is brought to justice.
James said while no punishment could reverse the family’s loss, holding those involved accountable would be an important step toward justice. He also condemned the manner of Ibrahim’s death, describing it as brutal and inhumane.
Earlier reports indicated that the incident occurred on Sunday at an off-campus apartment near the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos.
According to information released by the Plateau State Police Command, Ibrahim had attended a social gathering before spending the night at a friend’s apartment because it was too late to return home.
Police said the following morning, he was accused of stealing a missing iPhone after his friend reportedly discovered the device was no longer in the apartment.
Although Ibrahim initially left the premises, investigators said he later returned after being asked to explain himself.
The police alleged that he was subsequently confronted by his friend and a group of youths, who accused him of theft and allegedly assaulted him for several hours in an attempt to force a confession.
He later lost consciousness, and a nurse who examined him reportedly confirmed that he had died.
The Plateau State Police Command has arrested three suspects — Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear and Nensemka Fwanji — in connection with the alleged culpable homicide.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while the family says it is hoping those responsible will face the full weight of the law.
