An 18-seater commercial bus reportedly crashed into the protective fence surrounding Challenge Market in Ilorin, Kwara State, after suffering an alleged brake failure, narrowly averting what could have been a major tragedy.
The accident occurred when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to ram into the setback fence constructed by the Kwara State Government around the busy market.
Eyewitnesses said the impact was largely absorbed by the barrier, preventing the bus from ploughing into the bustling trading area where traders and shoppers usually conduct daily business.
No fatalities or serious injuries were reported as of the time of filing this report, although the incident triggered panic among traders, customers and passers-by.

The accident has reignited public discussion over the Kwara State Government’s earlier decision to remove roadside traders around Challenge Market and erect a protective fence as part of its urban renewal and public safety initiatives.
Several years ago, the state government directed traders occupying the roadside to relocate to designated areas to reduce traffic risks and improve safety. The decision, which included the construction of the perimeter fence, initially met resistance from some traders, including phone repairs and other business owners.
However, following the latest incident, many residents believe the fence proved to be a life-saving investment.
According to eyewitnesses, the area where the fence now stands previously served as a major trading spot, and a vehicle crashing into the market during business hours could have resulted in significant casualties.
Residents have since praised the government’s foresight, describing the protective barrier as a critical safety measure that prevented what could have been a devastating disaster.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, while motorists have again been advised to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before operating on public roads.
