Minister of Works David Umahi has reiterated his call for a public debate with Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, insisting he considers himself “on the ballot” for the 2027 presidential election.
Umahi made the remarks while inspecting an ongoing infrastructure project, days after Obi declined his invitation to compare their records as former state governors.
Minister explains ‘on the ballot’ comment
According to Umahi, his position in President Bola Tinubu’s administration means he has a direct stake in the outcome of the 2027 election.
He argued that if President Tinubu seeks re-election, he also considers himself part of the political contest because he wants the current administration to continue its projects.
“I’ve told him that I’m on the ballot,” Umahi said.
“When President Bola Tinubu is on the ballot, I’m on the ballot because I want these projects to be completed.”
Obi previously rejected debate invitation
The latest comments follow Obi’s decision to turn down Umahi’s proposal for a public debate.
The former Anambra State governor argued that the Works Minister was not the appropriate person for such an engagement, saying a debate should involve presidential candidates rather than government appointees.
Umahi, however, has maintained his position, insisting that discussing their respective performances as former governors would be beneficial to the public.
