The Tijjaniyya sect in Kano weekend said it has not endorsed any individual politician in the state. The rebuttal followed rumours that it had endorsed the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
This was made known to newsmen in Kano by the head of the popular Gausiyya Association of Tijjaniyya in Kano, Sheikh Abubakar Ahmad Darma.
He stated that as a religious body, the Tijjaniyya sect as an independent Islamic body with no political inclination and it has not endorsed any individual as its candidate in the state.
He stated further that every member has the right to belong to any political party or alignment.
He said members of the sect are free to vote for whosoever they decide to vote for as individual citizens exercising their constitutional rights.
“The Tijjaniyya sect is not a political entity but a purely religious body with millions of members across the country.
“However, members of the sect as individuals are free to exercise their constitutional rights to vote and be voted for. But as a body we have not endorsed any individual,” he stated.
