THE special adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka T. Famadewa (Rtd), has convened the maiden Homeland Security stakeholders’ meeting at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Abuja.
The meeting brought together heads and representatives of key Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), as well as critical stakeholders to strengthen inter-agency collaboration towards enhancing Nigeria’s homeland security architecture.
In his opening remarks, the special adviser underscored the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to building a secure, resilient and technology-driven homeland security ecosystem capable of effectively addressing both current and emerging threats.
Famadewa emphasized that achieving this objective requires sustained collaboration, intelligence sharing and coordinated action across all relevant institutions.
The meeting provided an opportunity to acquaint stakeholders with the mandate of the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security and its current strategic priorities.
Deliberations focused principally on developing practical frameworks for achieving four (4) key priorities, namely: the implementation of a Unified Surveillance Programme to enhance situational awareness across the country; measures to address anonymity concerns by strengthening identity management and reducing the exploitation of anonymous platforms for criminal activities; strategies for improving border security through enhanced coordination, technology deployment, and intelligence-led operations; as well as the establishment of more effective Early Warning, Crisis Reporting and Response mechanisms to facilitate timely detection, coordinated decision-making and rapid response to security threats and emergencies.
He emphasized that the mandate of his office is to complement, not replace, existing security efforts in the country. He also commended the armed forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices towards restoring peace across the nation and stressed the importance of non-kinetic measures to build societal resilience.
Participants engaged in robust discussions, exchanged perspectives based on their respective institutional mandates and reaffirmed their collective commitment to fostering greater synergy in the implementation of these strategic priorities. The stakeholders acknowledged that the complex and evolving nature of contemporary security challenges demands a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach anchored on collaboration, information sharing, technological innovation and institutional coordination.
The meeting concluded with a shared resolve to establish appropriate coordination mechanisms, sustain regular stakeholder engagements and develop actionable implementation frameworks that will translate the agreed priorities into measurable outcomes in support of national security and public safety.
The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary Special Services Office, Comptroller-General of Customs, Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Director-General of the Office for Strategic Preparedness and Resilience (OSPRE), while the armed forces, relevant Ministries, security and intelligence agencies, regulatory bodies and stakeholders were duly represented.
