The Delta State Police Command has arrested popular content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over allegations of raping a 20-year-old woman who later died after allegedly ingesting insecticide.
The arrest followed a petition submitted to the Command alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after Ogbonna allegedly invited her with a promise to train her in content creation through a programme promoted on his social media platforms.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the woman was allegedly taken to a hotel shortly after arriving in Asaba, where she was raped and physically assaulted by the suspect.
Police said the victim returned home traumatised and later recounted the incident to her parents.
Before her death, she reportedly recorded a video in which she detailed the alleged assault and the emotional distress she said she suffered afterwards.
Investigators said the young woman subsequently consumed a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt. She was rushed to a medical facility but later died.
Following receipt of the petition, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, directed the Area Commander in Effurun to commence an immediate investigation into the allegations.
The police said the directive led to the arrest of Ogbonna, who was taken into custody for questioning. According to the Command, the suspect made statements considered useful to the investigation, while efforts are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police assured the bereaved family and members of the public that the Command would carry out a thorough, professional and impartial investigation.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring justice and taking appropriate legal action in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
