Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to suspend the recently introduced examination fees, describing the move as a positive response to public concerns.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, Obi said the reversal reflects the importance of listening to citizens, especially on policies that directly affect millions of Nigerian families.
‘Education should remain accessible’
According to Obi, introducing additional fees at the basic education level would have placed unnecessary financial pressure on parents already struggling with the country’s economic challenges.
He argued that access to education should be protected rather than limited, stressing that every child deserves the opportunity to learn regardless of their family’s financial situation.
Obi maintained that education is a fundamental right and should not be treated as a means for generating government revenue.
Calls for review of hardship-related policies
The former Anambra State governor also urged the Federal Government to reassess other policies that may be worsening the economic burden on ordinary Nigerians.
He said governments should focus on investing in education and creating opportunities that encourage school enrolment instead of introducing measures that could discourage attendance.
According to Obi, expanding access to quality education remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the number of out-of-school children and improve the country’s future.
Obi commends public advocacy
Obi also acknowledged the role played by parents, civil society groups and concerned Nigerians who spoke out against the proposed examination fees.
He noted that leaders should be prepared to reconsider policies when citizens raise legitimate concerns, adding that responsive governance strengthens public trust and promotes national development.
