The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has said the likelihood of him contesting the presidency in 2031 is very low.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Rufai Oseni, the former Anambra State governor said Nigeria’s power rotation arrangement between the North and the South would largely determine his political future.
Zoning could influence future decision
Obi explained that if the presidency shifts to the North after the 2027 election, the next opportunity for a southern candidate under the zoning principle would come years later.
According to him, he would be about 78 years old by the time power is expected to return to the South, making another presidential bid unlikely.
He noted that his decision is based on his belief in the zoning arrangement rather than personal ambition.
2031 bid still depends on political developments
The former governor, however, did not completely rule out another presidential contest.
Obi stated that if the presidency remains in the South after the 2027 election, the possibility of seeking the office in 2031 could still exist.
He added, however, that such a scenario remains unlikely and that any final decision would depend on the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
