The Oyo State Government has dismissed reports claiming it paid ransom to secure the release of pupils and teachers abducted by bandits in Oriire Local Government Area, insisting that the allegation is false and misleading.
Government denies ransom allegations
In a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government described the claim as completely untrue, accusing irresponsible bloggers of spreading misinformation capable of creating confusion and unnecessary panic among residents.
Oyelade maintained that although both the Oyo State and Federal Governments have continued to work tirelessly to secure the safe release of the abducted children and their teachers, no ransom has been paid to the kidnappers either directly or indirectly.
He stressed that security agencies remain actively engaged in rescue operations and that every effort is being made to ensure the victims regain their freedom safely.
“The reports suggesting that ransom has been paid are far from the truth. No payment has been made to the bandits, either directly or indirectly,” the commissioner stated.
Residents urged to rely on official information
The commissioner urged members of the public to ignore unverified reports circulating on social media and instead rely on information released through official government channels.
According to him, spreading false information could undermine ongoing rescue efforts and create unnecessary anxiety among the families of the abducted victims and the general public.
He reassured residents that the state government remains committed to protecting lives and ensuring that the abductees are reunited with their families.
Security agencies intensify rescue efforts
Oyelade said the Oyo State Government is working closely with security agencies and relevant stakeholders to secure the safe release of the victims and bring the unfortunate incident to a successful conclusion.
He reiterated the government’s determination to continue supporting security operations until every abducted pupil and teacher is safely rescued.
Abduction still raises concerns
The commissioner recalled that the victims were abducted on May 15 when armed bandits attacked three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esienle communities of Oriire Local Government Area during a coordinated operation that also claimed the life of a teacher.
Since the attack, the abducted pupils and teachers have remained in captivity, while the state and federal governments continue collaborating with security agencies to intensify efforts aimed at securing their release.
The incident has continued to generate widespread concern across Oyo State, with parents, community leaders and civil society organisations calling for intensified security measures to prevent further attacks on schools and ensure the safe return of all those still in captivity.
