The Edo state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Friday inaugurated the state’s first visually impaired permanent secretary, Mr. Melody Omosah, alongside 19 others, declaring that the appointments were the outcome of a transparent, merit-based selection process aimed at strengthening the state’s civil service.
The ceremony, held at the Festival Hall of the Government House, Benin City, also saw the swearing in of two commissioners and seven members of the Governing Council of the Edo State College of Health Sciences and Technology.
Addressing the appointees, Okpebholo disclosed that no fewer than 250 senior civil servants participated in the promotion exercise, with only 20 emerging successful after a competitive screening process involving examinations and interviews.
He said the appointments underscored his administration’s commitment to rewarding competence and professionalism rather than political patronage.
”Today is a special day for all of you who have reached the pinnacle of your civil service careers. No fewer than 250 officers sat for the examination. I met with 25 candidates, but only 20 were successful,” he said.
The governor warned the new permanent secretaries against taking instructions allegedly issued in his name without proper confirmation, stressing that his administration would continue to uphold due process in the conduct of government business.
Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated permanent secretaries, Omosah expressed appreciation to the governor for the confidence reposed in them and pledged their loyalty and dedication to the effective implementation of government policies and programmes.
