The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has announced a planned two-day power outage that will affect the Presidential Villa, the National Assembly, the Supreme Court and several other government institutions, military formations and residential areas across the Federal Capital Territory.
In a public notice issued on Friday, the electricity distribution company said the temporary outage will take place on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, 2026, as part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades being carried out in collaboration with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
According to AEDC, the interruption is necessary to enable engineers to safely relocate two major transmission towers, identified as H3 and H5, connected to the 132/33kV Apo Transmission Station. The relocation is required to pave the way for ongoing road construction projects within the Federal Capital Territory.
The company emphasized that the planned blackout is not the result of a system failure or a national grid collapse but a scheduled engineering exercise designed to ensure the safety of workers and protect critical electricity infrastructure during the construction process.
“The outage is a necessary measure to allow engineering teams to safely adjust grid infrastructure around active construction zones without risking damage to transmission facilities,” the company said.
Several strategic government institutions will be affected by the temporary outage, including the State House (Aso Villa), National Assembly Annex, Supreme Court, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and the National Judicial Council (NJC).
The planned power interruption will also extend to key security and intelligence establishments such as the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Military facilities expected to experience the outage include Aguiyi Ironsi Barracks, Lungi Barracks, Mambilla Barracks, Niger Barracks and Gowon Barracks.
In addition, several residential and commercial areas, including Aso Drive, Asokoro Extension, Yakubu Gowon Crescent, Gado Nasko Street, TY Danjuma Street, the State House Clinic and the IBB International Golf Club, will also be without public electricity supply during the exercise.
AEDC acknowledged the inconvenience the planned outage may cause residents and businesses in the affected areas and apologised to its customers. The company advised consumers to make alternative power arrangements where necessary while the maintenance work is underway.
It, however, noted that essential government facilities such as the Presidential Villa and the State House Clinic are equipped with backup power systems to ensure the continuity of critical operations throughout the outage.
The electricity distributor assured customers that technical teams would work round the clock with officials of the FCDA and TCN to complete the transmission tower relocation within the scheduled period and restore electricity immediately after the project is concluded.
Residents were also encouraged to monitor AEDC’s official communication channels for updates on the progress of the work and the restoration of power supply.
