Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has rejoined South African Premiership side Chippa United after spending five months away from competitive football, with his representative explaining that the decision to step back was driven by personal tragedy rather than football-related issues.
The club confirmed Nwabali’s return over the weekend, ending months of uncertainty following the mutual termination of his contract in February.
Personal losses forced goalkeeper to step away
At the time of his departure, the Nigerian international disclosed only that he needed to prioritize his happiness and personal well-being.
However, his agent, Mohammed Lawal, has now revealed that the goalkeeper took a break after losing three close family members within a short period.
According to Lawal, Nwabali first lost his grandmother before Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic. His father, Godspower Nwabali, also passed away shortly after the goalkeeper featured for the Super Eagles, while his mother, Grace Nwabali, died on January 1, 2025.
The series of family tragedies left the goalkeeper emotionally overwhelmed and affected his mental well-being.
Mental health became the priority
Lawal explained that those close to Nwabali encouraged him to step away from football before making any career decisions that could have long-term consequences.
He said the goalkeeper needed time to grieve and recover mentally, adding that the decision had nothing to do with disagreements at Chippa United or transfer offers from other clubs.
According to the agent, Nwabali preferred to keep his struggles private rather than publicly discuss his mental health.
He stressed that footballers also face personal challenges away from the spotlight and deserve the space to heal.
Interest from other clubs
Despite his absence from football, Lawal disclosed that Nwabali attracted interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, England and other parts of Africa.
However, the goalkeeper decided against making a move until he felt emotionally ready to return to action.
He also received support from Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who maintained regular communication with him throughout his recovery.
Why Chippa United welcomed him back
Lawal said Nwabali’s positive relationship with Chippa United played a key role in his return.
According to him, the club’s management understood the circumstances surrounding his departure and remained supportive throughout his recovery.
Returning to a familiar environment, he explained, gives the goalkeeper the best opportunity to regain his confidence and return to peak performance.
Nwabali rose to prominence following his impressive performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and will now look to restart his club career with Chippa United as he prepares for future domestic and international assignments.
