A cholera outbreak has reportedly killed nine Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in the Timbuktu Triangle, a known insurgent stronghold in Borno State.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama, citing intelligence sources, said the outbreak had spread across several ISWAP enclaves in the area, highlighting deteriorating sanitary conditions and limited access to medical care within the group’s camps.
According to the sources on Thursday, two other fighters who contracted cholera were allegedly executed by fellow members after attempts to treat them in Kimba village proved unsuccessful.
The sources said the outbreak reflects worsening health conditions in the insurgents’ hideouts, where sustained military operations have disrupted supply routes, including access to medicines and other medical supplies.
They added that security commanders had been encouraged to intensify efforts to intercept pharmaceutical supplies believed to be destined for ISWAP camps, with the aim of further degrading the group’s medical capacity and operational capability.
