The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the killing of a 300-level Anatomy student of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, who was reportedly shot dead by suspected kidnappers in his off-campus hostel.
NANS described the incident as a tragic reminder of the growing security challenges confronting students in tertiary institutions across the country.
In a statement issued on Monday, NANS President, Olushola Babatunde, expressed grief over the student’s death and called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Describing the incident as heartbreaking, Babatunde said no student should lose their life while pursuing an education, stressing that institutions of learning must remain safe spaces for students.
“No student should lose their life while pursuing an education. We call on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said.
The association also urged the relevant authorities to strengthen security within and around tertiary institutions, particularly in off-campus student communities, to protect students from violent crimes and other security threats.
“Students deserve to learn and live in a safe environment without fear of violence or criminal attacks,” Babatunde added.
NANS extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, the Ambrose Alli University community and students affected by the tragedy, noting that no parent should have to endure the pain of losing a child under such circumstances.
The association also prayed for the repose of the student’s soul and reaffirmed its commitment to advocating improved security measures to safeguard students across the country’s campuses.
