Two policemen have been crushed to death during an autocrash involving a military vehicle in Kaduna State.
The victims BB identified as Tanko Musa and Ajubi Onah, were said to be crossing the road after which the they were squashed by the advancing military Toyota Hilux after which they died on the spot.
Witnesses claimed the vehicle was being driven at high speed and that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
It was gathered on Friday that the fatal crash occurred on Thursday at the Nigerian Defence Academy Junction in the Kawo area of Kaduna metropolis, Kaduna State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the officers had no opportunity to escape before the vehicle rammed into them.
A source described the incident as a devastating loss for the police division, saying the deaths had left colleagues and residents in shock.
“This is a painful day for everyone at the division. We have lost two dedicated officers in a crash that could have been avoided.
“There are serious questions that must be answered about the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the source said.
The deceased officers were attached to the Kawo Division of the Kaduna State Police Command.
A video recorded shortly after the incident showed the bodies of the officers lying on the road as sympathisers gathered at the scene, while security personnel attempted to control the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, the soldier allegedly involved in the crash had not been arrested, despite allegations that he was intoxicated when the incident occurred.
Neither the Nigerian Army nor the Kaduna State Police Command had issued an official statement on the incident.
Meanwhile, the tragedy has renewed concerns over repeated cases involving military personnel allegedly causing fatal road accidents across the country.
