Former John Obi Mikel has shared his views on the long-running debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, saying his former club, Chelsea F.C., devoted far more tactical attention to stopping Messi than Ronaldo.
Speaking on the comparison between the two football icons, Mikel said that while personal preferences may lead some fans to favour Ronaldo, an objective assessment of their footballing abilities places Messi in a class of his own.
According to the former Super Eagles midfielder, Chelsea did not build its match plans around neutralising Ronaldo whenever they faced him, relying instead on defender Ashley Cole to handle the Portuguese star.
“In my opinion, when focusing strictly on their football abilities, Ronaldo doesn’t rank among the top 20 greatest players of all time. During my tenure at Chelsea, our strategy didn’t revolve around countering Ronaldo; instead, we treated him like any top-tier opponent, relying on Ashley Cole’s expertise to handle him,” Mikel said.

He, however, noted that matches against FC Barcelona were approached differently because of Messi’s extraordinary influence on games.
According to Mikel, Chelsea’s tactical meetings, training sessions and match preparations largely focused on finding ways to contain the Argentine forward, whom he described as the player who inspired the greatest fear among opponents.
“He was the player who instilled the most fear, given his ability to alter the course of a match in an instant,” he said.
Mikel explained that stopping Messi required a collective effort rather than relying on an individual defender, adding that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner could still dribble past multiple opponents, create chances and dictate the tempo of matches despite close attention.
“If you found yourself isolated with Messi, the situation would likely become precarious,” he added.
The former Chelsea midfielder stressed that his comments were not intended to diminish Ronaldo’s achievements, describing the Portuguese captain as one of the greatest players of his generation with an outstanding record.
However, he argued that football extends beyond goals, encompassing dribbling, creativity, vision, playmaking, assists and overall control of matches—qualities he believes Messi has consistently demonstrated at the highest level.
Mikel concluded that comparing other players with Messi is difficult because of the Argentine’s exceptional all-round influence on the game.
