Kanishka Narayan, who was born in Bihar and later moved to the UK, has been appointed as the country’s first Minister for Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The other two Indian-origin MPs are Satvir Kaur and Harpreet Uppal, both elected to the Parliament for the first time in the 2026 general election.
Who is Satvir Kaur?
Satvir Kaur was born in September 1984 in England in a Punjabi family. She studied at Mount Pleasant Juniors and St Anne’s Catholic School before earning a degree in Modern History and Politics from the University of Southampton. She later completed a Law degree from Solent University.
Kaur entered politics in 2011, when she was elected as a councillor for Southampton’s Shirley ward. She was re-elected in 2015 and 2019. In 2022, she became Leader of Southampton City Council, and created history as the first female Sikh leader of a local authority in Britain.

She was selected as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Southampton Test in 2022 and won the seat in the 2024 general election.
Satvir has now been appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Minister for Equalities) in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government under Andy Burnham cabinet. She was also named Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Home Office.
Earlier, she served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Cabinet Office from September 2025 to July 2026. She took maternity leave from September 2025 to February 2026 and gradually returned to work in January 2026.
Who is Harpreet Uppal?
Harpreet Uppal was born in Fartown, Huddersfield in a Sikh family. She attended Fartown High School and later studied politics at Greenhead College, earned a degree in Politics from Nottingham Trent University, and completed a master’s degree in International Politics from the University of Bradford.
She is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Huddersfield since winning the 2024 UK general election. Earlier, she served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Labour MP Debbie Abrahams and also worked on Andy Burnham’s successful campaign to become Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017.

Uppal began her elected political career in 2018, when she became a councillor for Ashbrow ward on Kirklees Council. During her time on the council, she chaired the Economy and Neighbourhood Scrutiny Panel before stepping down in 2022.
She was selected as Labour’s candidate for Huddersfield in 2022 and won the seat in the 2024 general election. After entering Parliament, she served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner from July 2024 to September 2025.
Uppal has now been appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice and also took on the role of Assistant Whip.
