Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has taken delivery of two security surveillance aircraft as part of efforts to improve security operations and strengthen the state’s capacity to combat criminal activities.
The aircraft arrived at the Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Ibadan, on Tuesday, with the governor describing the development as a significant step towards enhancing the state’s security architecture.
Makinde said the surveillance aircraft would provide additional support for security agencies by improving aerial monitoring, intelligence gathering and response capabilities across Oyo State.
Speaking with journalists after receiving the aircraft, the governor explained that the decision to acquire the equipment was informed by the need to complement the efforts of security personnel on the ground.
He noted that the size of Oyo State and the challenges of monitoring its vast areas made it necessary to adopt modern security technology capable of providing wider coverage.
According to him, the aircraft would enable security agencies to monitor more locations within a shorter period and respond more effectively to emerging threats.
Aircraft part of long-term security strategy
Makinde stated that the acquisition was part of a long-term security plan by his administration and was not a reaction to the recent kidnapping incident in Oriire Local Government Area.
He said the government had been working on strengthening the state’s security system before the incident, adding that the surveillance aircraft were acquired to support broader efforts aimed at protecting residents.
The governor stressed that improved security requires a combination of manpower, intelligence and technology, noting that the new equipment would complement existing security measures.
Nigerian Air Force pilots to manage operations
Makinde disclosed that the aircraft would be deployed immediately for security operations across the state.
He added that they were flown into Ibadan by Nigerian Air Force pilots following a Memorandum of Understanding between the Oyo State Government and the Nigerian Air Force.
The governor said the partnership would ensure that the aircraft are operated by trained personnel and used effectively in strengthening security coordination.
Makinde assures residents of continued commitment
The governor also expressed relief over the safe rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area.
He commended the security agencies involved in the rescue operation and said the development brought relief to the affected families and residents of the state.
Makinde assured the people of Oyo State that his administration would continue to prioritise their safety and welfare, stressing that a secure environment remains essential for development and prosperity.
