The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft has incepted over 756kg of suspected cannabis and subsequently handed them over to the National Drugs Law and Enforcement (NDLEA) in Lagos.
The interception followed a series of intelligence-led operations aimed at disrupting drug trafficking along Nigeria’s coastline.
The illicit substance, packed in 18 bags, was formally handed over weekend by the Commander of NNS Beecroft, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, to the NDLEA Deputy Marine Commander, Commander of Narcotics Luka Yerima, who received the exhibits for further investigation and necessary legal action.
The Navy said the seizures were made during separate operations conducted by the ship’s Quick Response Team (QRT) in collaboration with the Western Regional Control Centre (WE CAN) and Falcon eye. Five bags were intercepted at Abule Osun on April 7, two bags were recovered at Ikare Island on April 13, while the remaining 11 bags were seized at Alpha Beach on July 15, 2026.
Naval authorities stated that the operations formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime security in line with the operational directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, and the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha. The strategy focuses on leveraging intelligence, surveillance technology and inter-agency collaboration to prevent criminal elements from exploiting Nigeria’s maritime environment.
Receiving the exhibits, Commander Yerima praised the Nigerian Navy for its commitment to tackling illicit drug trafficking and stated the importance of sustained collaboration among security agencies to combat organised crime.
