A coalition of civil society organisations in Kano has called for peace before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
The message iscontained in a statement signed twelve Kano-based civil society organisations and made available to newsmen on Tuesday by the convener, Amb. Abdullah D. Muhammad.
The group called for the suspension of large political gatherings, adoption of safer, responsible campaign alternatives to protect lives and properties ahead of 2027 elections.
The CSOs warned that in recent times, political violence especially involving street thugs, has surged, adding that it is allegedly driven by politicians who find and direct the gangs during electioneering.
“In early 2026, a fresh wave of thuggery killed at least numerous people, marking a major escalation in politically motivated violence.
“Clashes between rival gangs have become more frequent, with armed thugs chasing and killing victims while chanting party slogans,” the CSOs said.
They expressed dismay that all efforts to neutralise the problem have proved abortive as the menace persists, threatening democratic stability in Kano.
While commending the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his efforts towards securing Kano, the CSOs stated that more needs to be done as they gave examples of ten violent incidents that led to loss of lives and property that were politically influenced.
While calling for independent investigations into the political violence mentioned, they also demanded that all political rallies and gatherings in the stae be suspended until comprehensive security framework is put in place.
