Popular Nigerian comedian and satirist Oguchi Ugbede Kenneth, widely known as Sarkin Dariya, has alleged that he is receiving threats following his recent commentaries and musical content addressing insecurity and governance in Nigeria.
The claims come days after Abuja-based lawyer Deji Adeyanju issued a public statement expressing concern over the comedian’s safety and calling on relevant authorities to protect him.
In the statement dated July 7, 2026, Adeyanju said his law firm represents Sarkin Dariya and had become aware of “a series of threats” allegedly directed at the comedian following his satirical commentary on issues affecting Nigerians.
According to the statement, the lawyer reminded authorities that Sarkin Dariya had exercised his constitutional right to freedom of expression through lawful means and urged security agencies to ensure his protection.
“I’m Watching My Back”
Speaking in a lengthy video released on Monday, July 13, Sarkin Dariya claimed he has been living in fear after publishing content criticizing Nigeria’s security situation.
According to him, he has received repeated warnings from different people and has had to become more security conscious.
“I need to watch my back well because I heard that they are looking for me,” he said.
The comedian further alleged that the threats intensified after releasing songs and online content criticizing the handling of insecurity and the government’s approach to dealing with banditry.
Says Advocacy Has Cost Him Professionally
Sarkin Dariya claimed his outspoken views have affected his career, alleging that he has lost performance opportunities and corporate engagements because of his public commentary.
He said speaking on national issues has also exposed him to personal risks but insisted he would continue advocating for a safer Nigeria.
According to him, raising awareness about insecurity is one way of contributing to national development, even if others choose different methods such as street protests.
Commends Security Chiefs
Despite criticizing aspects of Nigeria’s security situation, Sarkin Dariya praised members of the armed forces and commended recent statements by the Minister of Defence urging troops to take decisive action against terrorists and bandits.
He argued that stronger action against violent criminals would improve public confidence and encourage investment in Nigeria.
Calls for History to Return to Schools
Beyond security, the comedian appealed to President Bola Tinubu to restore the compulsory teaching of Nigerian history in schools.
According to him, understanding the country’s history would help build patriotism and strengthen national consciousness among younger generations.
He also maintained that constructive criticism should not be mistaken for political opposition, saying governments should welcome ideas that improve governance.
Lawyer Seeks Government Protection
In his earlier statement, Adeyanju warned that any failure to provide adequate protection for Sarkin Dariya, should harm come to him as a result of the alleged threats, would raise serious legal questions.
The lawyer urged authorities to act promptly to guarantee the safety of his client.
As of the time of filing this report, Nigerian security agencies have not publicly responded to the allegations made by Sarkin Dariya or the statement issued by his legal representative.
