Nollywood actor and filmmaker Ikechukwu Mitchel Ogbonna, popularly known as IK Ogbonna, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late friend and colleague, Alex Ekubo, nearly two months after the actor’s death.
Ekubo died on May 12, 2026, after spending hours on life support. His family announced that he passed away at Evercare Hospital in Lagos due to complications linked to advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
Throughout the funeral activities and burial ceremonies, IK Ogbonna did not make any public statement, prompting speculation that he was mourning privately.
Emotional Instagram message
On Tuesday, July 15, the actor finally addressed the loss in a lengthy post on Instagram, describing Alex Ekubo as his best friend and brother.
Ogbonna said the tragedy completely changed his understanding of death, explaining that its true weight is only felt when someone close becomes the victim.
He added that the past two months had been filled with grief, unanswered questions and a search for meaning as he struggled to cope with the painful loss.
Memories of friendship
Reflecting on their friendship, Ogbonna said they often discussed growing old together, building businesses, making films, travelling and raising their families.
According to him, neither of them imagined that one would leave so soon, noting that life had taken an unexpected path.
Despite the pain, he said his faith had helped him accept that some questions may never be fully understood.
Lessons from Alex Ekubo’s life
The actor described Ekubo as someone who lived with kindness, generosity and genuine love for people.
He said the late actor’s legacy should not be measured by wealth, awards or popularity but by the positive impact he made on those around him.
Ogbonna noted that the experience had reminded him that life is fragile and that compassion, character and meaningful relationships remain the greatest gifts a person can leave behind.
Call to cherish loved ones
He encouraged people to appreciate family and friends while they still have the opportunity, urging them to forgive easily, strengthen relationships and live intentionally.
Ogbonna concluded his tribute by thanking Ekubo for years of friendship, support and unforgettable memories, promising to continue pursuing purpose while honouring the values his late friend embodied.
