The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has demanded for transparency and accountability, following the death of 26-year-old physiotherapist, Mary Habila, at the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi’s residence in Uburu, Ebonyi state.
It was reported that on June 26, 2026, Mary Habila was found dead in her room in the minister’s palatial residence.
The national coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement Thursday in Abuja, said transparent investigation would help guarantee public confidence in its outcome.
He added that every suspicious death should be investigated without fear or favour, regardless of the status of those involved.
Onwubiko urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the matter is handled impartially.
He called for a joint investigation supervised by the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Nigerian Bar Association and two credible civil society organisations.
He also demanded a comprehensive autopsy and forensic investigation.
Onwubiko said ordinary Nigerians in similar circumstances would likely face immediate police interrogation.
He questioned why a different standard should apply because the incident occurred in the residence of a serving minister.
He stated that any perception of interference could weaken public trust in government institutions.
He expressed condolences to the family of the late Habila and urged security agencies to carry out a thorough, professional and impartial investigation.
