A vigilante member has been killed in a fresh attack on Wereng-Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, sparking panic among residents after gunmen stormed the area late Tuesday night and opened fire before fleeing.
The victim, identified as 43-year-old Mangai Musa, was reportedly shot dead at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
Witnesses said the attack sent residents scrambling for safety as gunshots echoed through the community.
According to residents, the attack is the latest in a series of assaults targeting communities in the troubled Riyom area.
One resident, who spoke to newsmen on Wednesday, said the gunmen invaded Wereng-Rim at about 10 p.m., opened fire, killed the vigilante member, and fled before security operatives could respond.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) also confirmed the killing in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, saying, “Information available to the association indicates that Mangai Musa, 43, from Wereng-Rim community, was shot dead on the night of Tuesday, July 14, 2026.”
The association said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack were ongoing, while efforts to obtain a reaction from the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
