THE International team will need five points from Sunday’s singles to win the Presidents Cup for the first time in 28 years after maintaining a three-point lead over the United States in Medinah.
The Internationals lead 10-5 to 7.5 after three days of competition, with 15.5 points required to secure victory.
The United States made the stronger start on Saturday, winning two matches and halving another in the morning four-ball session.
However, the Internationals responded in the afternoon foursomes, with the teams sharing the session.
Canada’s Corey Conners produced the decisive moment, saving par on the 18th hole to win the final match and preserve his team’s three-point advantage.
International captain Geoff Ogilvy praised his players for recovering from difficult positions throughout the day.
“We were down in every match, and to come back and get one and a half points out of this morning, we felt that was a little victory,” Ogilvy said.
He added that the United States had played at a high level, particularly during the afternoon foursomes, making the Internationals’ recovery more significant.
“For the boys to somehow come back and pinch two points out of that and split the session was amazing,” he said.
The Internationals have won the Presidents Cup only once since the competition began in 1994, and have never won on American soil.
Twelve singles matches will be played on Sunday, with both teams needing to reach 15.5 points to claim the trophy. (BBC)
