A political group in Bauchi state under the banner of Concerned APC Youths Bauchi South, has petitioned Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), seeking the declaration of the seat of Senator Shehu Buba Umar vacant following his defection to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) from the APC.
In a press release issued to journalists, chairman of the group, Aminu Garba, said it submitted a petition on July 2, 2026, to the Senate president and the APC national secretariat on the matter.
According to him, the petitions were “duly acknowledged by both the Office of the President of the Senate and the APC National Secretariat”.
The group cited Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) as the basis for their demand.
They argued that Senator Buba Umar’s defection from the APC, “the political party under whose platform he was elected, to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP)” warrants constitutional action.
“We maintain that the electoral mandate freely given to Senator Shehu Buba Umar by the people of Bauchi South Senatorial District was obtained on the platform of the APC, and any voluntary abandonment of that platform must be subjected to the provisions of the Constitution,” the group stated.
Aminu Garba said their action is “purely constitutional, democratic, and devoid of any animosity.
“We firmly believe that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria remains supreme and must be respected by every elected public office holder, irrespective of status or influence.”
The group urged Akpabio, the National Assembly, the National Working Committee of the APC, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and “all other relevant constitutional authorities to urgently consider and act on the petition within 14 days or they will go to the court.
“We hereby give the aforementioned authorities fourteen (14) days from the date of this press release to take the necessary constitutional and administrative steps in response to our petition.
“Failure to take appropriate action within this period will leave us with no alternative but to pursue every lawful and constitutional remedy available, including seeking judicial intervention and engaging all democratic institutions to ensure that the Constitution is upheld”, the statement averred.
