FIFA has come under criticism from sections of the Argentine media following its decision to award Spain midfielder Rodri the Golden Ball at the 2026 FIFA World Cup instead of Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
The debate emerged after Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final, a result that ended Messi’s bid to win a second World Cup title.
Despite Argentina’s loss, Messi enjoyed an impressive tournament, finishing with eight goals and four assists. The Inter Miami forward was ultimately named the competition’s second-best player, while Rodri received the Golden Ball as the tournament’s outstanding performer after helping Spain lift the trophy.
One of the strongest reactions came from TyC Sports journalist Antonio Serpa, who argued that FIFA made the wrong decision by overlooking Messi.
Speaking on the Argentine television channel, Serpa described the choice as insensitive, insisting that Messi’s influence throughout the tournament extended far beyond statistics.
“Giving the award to Rodri is almost an insult. It shows a complete lack of sensitivity,” Serpa said.
While acknowledging Rodri’s quality, the journalist argued that Messi was the defining figure of the tournament because of his performances and leadership for Argentina.
Serpa also questioned FIFA’s selection criteria, suggesting that if team success played a major role in determining the winner, individual attacking contributions should have carried greater weight.
His comments have added to the post-tournament debate among football fans and analysts over whether individual awards should primarily recognise outstanding personal performances or reward players from the championship-winning team.
Rodri played a key role in Spain’s successful campaign, helping La Roja secure their second FIFA World Cup title with victory over Argentina in New Jersey.
