The Federal Government has expanded its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Teacher Capacity Development Programme to about 11,700 teachers across all Federal Unity Colleges, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening digital education nationwide.
The initiative, being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education through its Education Support Services Department in partnership with ICEDT Consult Limited, aims to equip teachers with digital skills to improve classroom instruction and promote the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in education.
According to a statement released on Friday, the programme was formalised with the signing of the Terms of Reference in Abuja.
The Director of Education Support Services, Gabriel Amudipe, described the initiative as a strategic investment in teacher development and the future of education.
He said the nationwide rollout follows the successful completion of a pilot phase in six Federal Unity Colleges, one from each of the country’s six geopolitical zones.
According to the ministry, the programme will strengthen teachers’ digital skills, improve lesson planning, enhance classroom instruction and enable educators to effectively integrate AI into teaching and learning.
The ministry said about 11,700 teachers are expected to benefit from the initiative, which is also aimed at improving learning outcomes and equipping students with the digital knowledge and skills needed for the 21st-century economy.
Amudipe urged all stakeholders to maintain high implementation standards and ensure effective monitoring and quality assurance throughout the nationwide rollout.
