Thousands of Facebook users experienced difficulties accessing the platform’s desktop version on Sunday after a widespread service disruption left many unable to open their accounts.
Users attempting to log in through a web browser were greeted with a message stating that their accounts were “temporarily unavailable” because of a site-related issue. The notice advised users to try again later while the problem was being resolved.
Data from outage monitoring platform Downdetector showed a sharp rise in complaints shortly before 9 a.m., with many users searching online to confirm whether Facebook was experiencing technical problems.
According to the reports, website access issues made up the largest share of complaints, followed by login failures and problems affecting users’ news feeds.
As the disruption continued, several users turned to X to share screenshots and ask whether others were experiencing similar issues.
Some users said the problem appeared limited to the desktop version, noting that Facebook’s mobile application continued to function normally.
Posts on online discussion forums also suggested the outage affected users across multiple countries, raising concerns about a broader technical fault.
As of the time of publication, Meta, Facebook’s parent company, had not released an official statement explaining the cause of the disruption or when full service would be restored.
The incident comes as social media platforms continue to face occasional global outages that can disrupt communication, business activities and access to online communities.
