A Nigerian lawyer, Waliu Taofik, has offered his interpretation of the legal implications of the recent court wedding between content creator Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, and his partner, Amadou Elizabeth Aminata, also known as Jarvis.
His comments come after the couple’s civil wedding attracted widespread discussion on social media, with many users questioning whether Peller, who is a Muslim, can legally marry another wife after contracting a statutory marriage.
In a post shared on his X account, Taofik argued that Nigerian law allows a Muslim man who married under the Marriage Act to also marry another Muslim woman under Islamic law.
According to the lawyer, the civil wedding does not, in his view, prevent a Muslim man from entering into a subsequent marriage conducted under Islamic rites.
His remarks followed online speculation that the marriage automatically prevents Peller from taking another wife in the future. Others also claimed that Jarvis would be entitled to half of the content creator’s wealth if the marriage were to end in divorce.
Peller and Jarvis officially exchanged vows during a civil ceremony attended by family members and close associates before signing the marriage register.
The wedding marks another milestone in the couple’s relationship ahead of their white wedding, scheduled for August 1, 2026.
Earlier this month, the pair announced their wedding plans through a cinematic video shared across their social media platforms before unveiling their official pre-wedding photographs.
Before the civil ceremony, Peller also completed the traditional marriage rites in Benin City, Edo State, where he met Jarvis’ family and fulfilled the customary requirements, including the payment of her bride price.
The influencer couple have built a large following across social media through comedy skits, TikTok livestreams and relationship-focused content, making their wedding one of the most talked-about celebrity events online.
