Aston Villa have joined the race to sign Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi, setting up a transfer battle with Newcastle United for one of the standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to the BBC, Newcastle had been leading the chase for the highly rated Freiburg star, but Villa have now stepped up their pursuit as manager Unai Emery looks to bolster his midfield ahead of the new season.

A deal worth around £50 million would make the 20-year-old Villa’s most expensive signing, eclipsing the fee paid to Everton for Amadou Onana in 2024.
Villa’s interest comes amid uncertainty over the future of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans, who is reportedly in advanced talks with Manchester United, while Onana is expected to miss a significant part of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during Belgium’s World Cup Round of 16 victory over the United States.
Manzambi’s stock has soared following a remarkable World Cup campaign with Switzerland. The Freiburg midfielder scored three goals and provided two assists, becoming the youngest player since 1966 to record five goal contributions at a single World Cup.
His performances helped establish him as one of the tournament’s breakout stars and have attracted interest from several top European clubs.
Champions League football is believed to be a key factor in Villa’s pursuit, with Emery’s side returning to Europe’s premier club competition after securing qualification last season.
Manzambi is also no stranger to Villa, having faced the Premier League club in the UEFA Europa League final in May, where Emery’s team claimed a 3-0 victory in Istanbul.
To comply with UEFA’s financial regulations, Villa are also expected to sanction player departures. Left-back Lucas Digne is reportedly close to rejoining Paris Saint-Germain, while forward Lewis Dobbin is set to complete a £9 million move to Southampton after failing to break into the club’s first team.
Although Newcastle remain firmly in contention, Villa’s late move has intensified the race for one of Europe’s brightest young midfielders, with Manzambi now facing a major decision over the next step in his career.
