The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has thrown its weight behind the Northern Governors Forum’s Northern Security Trust Fund, describing the initiative as a bold intervention capable of restoring peace, reviving agricultural activities, and strengthening food security across the region.
AFAN’s national president, Muhammad Magaji Gettado, said in a statement that the association welcomed the creation of the fund and praised the governors for taking what he described as a decisive step to confront the persistent security challenges affecting northern Nigeria.
He also commended the inauguration of the fund’s management board, expressing confidence that the selection of individuals with proven integrity and credible records would ensure transparency, accountability and effective management of the resources.
He said the board’s composition has inspired confidence among farmers that the initiative will deliver meaningful results in addressing insecurity, which has continued to disrupt farming activities in many parts of the region.
The farmers’ association further applauded the Northern Governors Forum for committing N1 billion every month to support security operations, describing the financial commitment as unprecedented and a clear demonstration of the governors’ resolve to protect lives, livelihoods and economic activities.
Gettado said improved security would encourage farmers to return to their fields without fear, increase agricultural production, stabilise food prices and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s quest for food security.
He noted that insecurity had remained one of the greatest threats to agricultural productivity, forcing many farmers to abandon their farmlands and reducing output in several food-producing communities.
AFAN urged its state chapters, cooperative societies and farmers across Northern Nigeria to support the initiative by working closely with security agencies and providing credible information that could assist in tackling criminal activities..
