A Northern Christian Progressive group has urged President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to appoint a Northern Christian as director-general of the party’s 2027 presidential campaign, saying the move would strengthen the president’s re-election bid and promote inclusiveness.
The group’s secretary, Rev. Hayap Musa Danladi, made the appeal in a statement issued Thursday.
Danladi said appointing a Northern Christian to lead the presidential campaign would provide an opportunity for Christians in the region to demonstrate their loyalty and political support for the Tinubu’s administration.
He recalled that during the 2023 presidential election, former Plateau state governor, Simon Lalong, who is a Northern Christian, served as director-general of Tinubu’s presidential campaign.
He said the appointment contributed significantly to the success of the APC’s presidential campaign.
“We appeal to President Tinubu to once again consider appointing a Christian politician from Northern Nigeria to head the 2027 presidential campaign, just as was done in 2023.
“We believe such an appointment will strengthen the campaign and help address misconceptions and allegations of bias being propagated by political opponents,” he said.
Danladi said the inclusion of Northern Christians in key campaign positions would further demonstrate mutual respect, inclusiveness and national unity.
He added that Christians across Northern Nigeria were prepared to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election based on what he described as the administration’s achievements and commitment to national development.
He called on Nigerians to reject religious intolerance and ethnic divisions, urging citizens to work together in the interest of peace, unity and development.
