The third group of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa has arrived in Lagos as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing repatriation exercise.
The Air Peace aircraft carrying about 271 returnees touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
The latest arrival follows earlier evacuations carried out by the government amid concerns over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa.
Evacuation follows immigration tensions
The exercise was launched after concerns emerged over threats and protests targeting undocumented migrants in South Africa.
The situation followed a June 30 deadline reportedly issued by some vigilante groups and organisations demanding the departure of undocumented foreigners from the country.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier announced that the third batch would return with 271 citizens onboard.
South African government urges calm
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged concerns surrounding illegal immigration during a national address.
However, he warned that any demonstrations must remain peaceful and within the law.
He condemned violence, intimidation, vandalism and attacks against foreign nationals, stating that immigration matters should be handled by government authorities.
Previous evacuation batches arrive
The latest group adds to Nigerians already brought back under the programme.
The first batch consisted of 258 returnees, while the second batch had 66 Nigerians who were also evacuated from South Africa.
