The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has confirmed that he has completed his nomination process with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed this in a statement shared on his verified X account on Tuesday.
The confirmation followed an earlier announcement by NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson that Obi’s details had been successfully uploaded to INEC’s online portal despite ongoing legal challenges involving the party.
Obi raises concerns over Nigeria’s challenges
While reacting to the nomination process, the former Anambra State governor questioned whether the country’s political leadership has shown enough commitment toward addressing major national issues.
Obi highlighted insecurity, economic hardship and alleged misuse of public resources as challenges requiring urgent attention.
He argued that a focused government should prioritise solving these problems instead of allowing political interests to dominate national conversations.
Calls for transparency in political process
The NDC candidate also called on INEC to publish the academic qualifications of all political aspirants to improve public confidence in elections.
According to Obi, since nomination documents require candidates to declare whether they have submitted false certificates, making credentials available for public review would support transparency.
He maintained that Nigeria needs leadership based on competence, integrity and commitment to public service.
“Transparency strengthens democracy and builds public trust. Nigeria’s problems are too serious for politics as usual. It is time for leadership defined by competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to service,” Obi stated.
