Trump-Backed De la Espriella Wins Colombia Vote In Tight Race

Right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella has emerged ahead in Colombia’s presidential election after the initial vote count showed a narrow victory over left-wing rival Iván Cepeda.

The result could mark a major political shift in Colombia, especially on issues including security, crime and the country’s long-running internal conflicts.

De la Espriella, who received backing from former United States President Donald Trump, has promised a tougher approach against illegal armed groups, drug trafficking and criminal activities.

Tight election result sparks reactions

With more than 99 per cent of ballots counted, initial figures showed de la Espriella receiving about 49.7 per cent of the votes, while Cepeda secured around 48.7 per cent.

Cepeda, an ally of outgoing President Gustavo Petro, has not accepted the preliminary result, saying the official verification process must be completed before a final outcome is recognised.

He said the initial figures were not yet legally binding and called for the proper electoral procedures to continue.

De la Espriella promises new direction

Addressing supporters after the count, de la Espriella described the result as the beginning of a new chapter for Colombia.

He promised to govern for all citizens, including those who supported his opponent.

The politician also pledged to respect Colombia’s 1991 Constitution and said his administration would focus on restoring security and creating opportunities.

His supporters celebrated across parts of the country, waving Colombian flags and wearing national football shirts during gatherings.

Security becomes key election issue

Security was one of the biggest issues during the campaign.

Colombia has continued to face challenges from armed groups, drug trafficking networks and criminal organisations.

De la Espriella has criticised President Petro’s negotiation-focused security strategy and has promised a stronger military response against illegal groups.

He has also proposed reforms including tougher action against organised crime and changes to government systems.

Who is Abelardo de la Espriella?

De la Espriella is a lawyer and businessman with no previous experience holding elected political office.

He became known nationally through his legal career and public appearances before entering politics.

His campaign gained attention after receiving support from Donald Trump, who praised his plans on crime and security.

The election outcome reflects a broader political shift in parts of Latin America, where security concerns have influenced voter decisions.
