30-Year-Old Netherlands-Based Azubuike Returns Home To Ebem Ohafia After Epic Journey Across 13 Countries | PHOTOS

There was excitement, celebration, and cultural display in Ebem Ohafia as Mr. Azubuike Onwuka, grandson of the late renowned academic, Prof. Uga Onwuka, finally returned to his ancestral homeland after more than three decades away.

Azubuike, who was born to a Dutch mother and raised in the Netherlands, undertook an extraordinary journey across Europe and Africa to reconnect with his roots and experience firsthand the land of his forefathers.

His historic expedition saw him travel through 13 countries; the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic, and Nigeria, before arriving in Ebem Ohafia, Abia State.

The remarkable road trip, which covered thousands of kilometres across two continents, has been described by many as a symbol of resilience, determination, and an enduring connection to ancestral heritage.

Speaking during his reception, Azubuike explained that his decision to embark on the challenging journey was inspired by a deep desire to reconnect with his paternal roots.

According to him, although he was born and raised in Europe, he always felt a strong connection to his father’s homeland and longed to experience the culture, history, and traditions of his people.

He further revealed that his decision to travel by road was influenced by a dream he had and his passion for adventure, which motivated him to undertake the historic solo expedition from Europe to Africa.

His arrival was greeted with jubilation by members of the Ebem Ohafia community, who turned out in large numbers to welcome him home.

The reception commenced at Ugomba Junction, where community leaders, youths, women, and well-wishers received him amidst excitement and celebration.

From there, he was escorted in a colourful procession led by the famous Ohafia War Dance Group to the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Ebem Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, His Royal Highness Ezie Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, JP, Kpoke I of Ekeluogo Ebem Autonomous Community.

At the palace, Azubuike paid homage to the revered monarch and received royal blessings before proceeding to his family compound, where relatives, friends, and members of the community continued the celebrations.

In a statement issued by the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), the community described the homecoming as a historic and emotional moment that demonstrated the enduring bond between Ebem sons and daughters in the diaspora and their ancestral homeland.

The Union commended the collective efforts of the Ezie Ebem-in-Council, EODU Central Executive Council, Ebem Youth Wing, traditional institutions, community leaders, and residents for organizing a befitting reception for the returning son.

Special appreciation was also extended to Ethnocentrique, whose cultural packaging and event coordination added colour and international appeal to the ceremony.

The community further acknowledged the role of ABN TV, whose extensive media coverage ensured that the event reached audiences across Nigeria and beyond, projecting the rich cultural heritage, hospitality, and unity of the Ebem people to the world.

The successful homecoming, according to community leaders, reflects the values of unity, love, identity, and cultural pride that have continued to define Ebem Ohafia through generations.

As the celebrations concluded, prayers were offered for God’s continued protection and blessings upon Azubuike Onwuka, his family, and the entire Ebem Ohafia community.

Many residents described the event as one that will remain in the history books of Ebem Ohafia for years to come, serving as a reminder that no matter how far one travels, home will always remain home.
