Shehbaz Sharif says Pakistan ‘forever grateful’ to Trump for India ceasefire, calls him ‘man of peace’
Islamabad will “forever remain grateful” to United States President Donald Trump for his “intervention” in the ceasefire with India, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Friday. Sharif hailed Trump as a “man of peace”, claiming it was his “timely and decisive intervention” which had brought about the ceasefire on May 10, 2025, PTI news agency reported.
“…It was President Trump’s timely and most decisive intervention that resulted in a ceasefire between Pakistan and India on May 10, last year,” Sharif said, while addressing a reception hosted by the US Embassy in Islamabad to mark the the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Sharif further added, “We shall forever remain grateful to President Trump for restoring peace in South Asia and saving millions of people. In this context, he will always be remembered as a man of peace.” Sharif described the ties between Washington and Islamabad as a “true and special relationship”.

Trump has, on several occasions in the past, claimed that he helped secure the ceasefire between India and Pakistan following the conflict between both countries in May last year. However, New Delhi has maintained that there was no third-party mediation in the matter and that an understanding had been reached directly between both countries.
Following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam in April last year which led to the deaths of 26 people, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025 targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Trump earlier on Friday too claimed to have ended eight wars. “I have ended eight wars, soon to be a ninth, I hope Russia-Ukraine conflict works out too,” he said.

Trump’s ceasefire claims denied by India
India has, since the ceasefire with Pakistan, countered Islamabad and Trump’s claims on the matter. Trump has, several times, claimed to have brokered peace between India and Pakistan, an assertion backed by Pakistan.
India has denied any third-party intervention, saying the understanding had been reached after Pakistan’s DGMO reached out to his Indian counterpart.
“The record of what happened at that time was very clear and the ceasefire was something which was negotiated between the DGMOs of the two countries…” external affairs minister S Jaishankar said last year.
Trump had also linked the truce to trade concessions and tariffs, with New Delhi countering the claim saying the issue never came up in any discussion with the US during the military escalation in May, 2025.
