The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Ogun 1 Area command says it has made a seizure of contraband items worth the cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N4.6 billion.
The command said it also generated N 259 million as baggage assessments, auctions of perishable items, PMS and other charges for the second quarter of the year.
The acting Area Controller of the command, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, while briefing newsmen at Idiroko Thursday said the revenue which depicts about 238% increase of collection for the period under review, is as a result of his personnel’s resilience in ensuring that importers and agents are made to adhere strictly to import and export guidelines in tandem with extant laws.
“The Command under my watch has remained relentless in enforcing government fiscal policies and trade guidelines.
“Consequently, the command recorded a total number of 146 seizures ranging from Cannabis Sativa, Foreign parboiled rice, Foot wears, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), three loads of trucks and other general merchandise.
“The command’s patrol team covering Ijebu-Ode axis intercepted a wonder truck with Reg No ENU-660-XY, bearing a deceptive ‘For Sale’ inscription, boldly written on the truck, designed to divert the attention of our officers, but a thorough physical examination revealed that the vehicle was conveying 2,427 pieces of smuggled pneumatic tyres,” he said.
