South African TV presenter and rapper Molemo Maarohanye, popularly known as Jub Jub, has been arrested for alleged kidnapping and for discharging a firearm in the direction of a taxi driver.
Police said the incident occurred on Sunday in Edenvale, about 25 kilometres from Johannesburg, following a confrontation over allegations that the driver was involved in a relationship with Maarohanye’s girlfriend.
According to police, Maarohanye allegedly forced the unnamed man into his vehicle and fired a shot towards him during the altercation.
The victim escaped unharmed and drove himself to a nearby police station to report the incident.
In a statement issued on Monday, police said the confrontation took place at about 07:30 local time (05:30 GMT), shortly after the driver had dropped off a passenger.
Maarohanye is expected to appear before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for an initial hearing.
The entertainer has had previous encounters with the law. In 2012, he was convicted of murder and attempted murder after a drag-racing incident that killed four schoolchildren and injured two others.
His conviction was later overturned on appeal, and he was instead found guilty of culpable homicide.
In 2023, he was also arrested on charges of rape, attempted murder and assault following allegations made by an ex-girlfriend, but the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) withdrew the case in 2024, saying there were no reasonable prospects of prosecution.
