Nigeria Taps Para Powerlifting Legend as Commonwealth Games Captain

In a strategic move celebrating para-sports excellence, Nigeria has named multiple Paralympic and world champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo as the captain of its contingent for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced the appointment on Sunday, stating that the selection underscores the nation’s focus on choosing a leader defined by outstanding achievements, professionalism, and a strong character that reflects the core values of Nigerian athletics.

“We are intentional about the selection of our team captain,”said the commission’s Director General Bukola Olopade in a statement given to Persecondnews in Abuja.

“Folashade Oluwafemiayo is the ideal choice, having consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, resilience, and excellence throughout her distinguished career.”

Olopade highlighted that Oluwafemiayo stands as a multiple gold medalist, former world champion, and one of Nigeria’s most decorated para athletes. Her leadership qualities and winning mentality continue to inspire teammates.

The powerhouse para powerlifter has carved her name among the world’s best, securing multiple Paralympic, World Championship, and Commonwealth titles while setting several world records.

Her consistent dominance on the global stage symbolizes excellence in Nigerian sports.

Oluwafemiayo is a four-time world champion and two-time Paralympic gold medalist. In 2021, she claimed gold at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she established a new world record with a lift of 152.5 kg.

She also delivered a standout performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, clinching gold in the heavyweight category and further cementing her legacy.

Her elevation to captain recognizes the vital contributions of Nigeria’s para athletes.

Over the years, they have ranked among the country’s most successful international ambassadors, delivering a significant portion of medals at Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, African Games, and World Championships.

Team Nigeria travels to Glasgow with a powerful mix of seasoned champions like Oluwafemiayo and emerging young talents across multiple disciplines.

All share a common goal of representing the nation with pride and distinction.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to hold in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.

The Commission reaffirmed that the team remains fully committed to upholding excellence, discipline, sportsmanship, and relentless pursuit of podium successes that will make Nigerians proud.
