Liverpool legend Alan Hansen has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following Portugal’s group-stage struggles.
Ronaldo, who is competing in another World Cup campaign at the age of 41, has faced difficulties making a major impact in some matches as Portugal finished second in their group.
The criticism came after Portugal’s goalless draw against Colombia on Saturday.
Ronaldo’s mixed tournament start
The Al-Nassr forward had a difficult opening match against DR Congo, where he struggled to create a significant impact.
However, he responded strongly in Portugal’s next game against Uzbekistan, scoring twice in a 5-0 victory.
The brace saw Ronaldo become the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments and also made him the oldest player to score twice in a World Cup match.
Hansen highlights Ronaldo’s limitations
Speaking during analysis on ESPN Podcasts, former defender Hansen said Ronaldo’s reduced pace has affected his ability to beat defenders.
He argued that the Portugal captain has increasingly relied on positioning and movement inside the penalty area rather than individual runs.
Hansen also pointed to Ronaldo’s frequent offside positions during the tournament, suggesting they were linked to his attempts to gain an advantage against defenders.
Portugal face Croatia next
Despite the criticism, Ronaldo remains a key figure for Portugal as they continue their World Cup campaign.
Portugal will face Croatia in the Round of 32, with both teams aiming to progress further in the tournament.
