Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has refused to confirm whether Cristiano Ronaldo will start against Croatia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage.
The 41-year-old forward featured in all three of Portugal’s group matches, scoring twice during the tournament.
However, questions have emerged over whether Ronaldo’s role should be reduced after concerns about his influence on Portugal’s overall attacking performance.
Portugal coach backs veteran forward
Despite the speculation, Martinez defended Ronaldo’s contribution to the team.
The Portugal manager said the veteran striker remains experienced at finding the right positions and continues to create opportunities for his teammates.
Martinez also insisted that Ronaldo’s physical and mental condition remains strong.
Changes possible for Croatia clash
The coach admitted that adjustments could be made for the knockout match but explained that team decisions would be based on performance data and available information.
Portugal will now prepare for a difficult last-32 meeting with Croatia as they look to continue their World Cup campaign.
Ronaldo remains one of Portugal’s most important players as the team targets another deep run at the tournament.
