MR Magaji Mato, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has urged Nigerians to intensify efforts in placing national interest above personal and political considerations in order to strengthen and sustain the country’s democracy.
Mato made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano while assessing the state of democracy in Nigeria ahead of the June 12 celebration.
The SAN also stressed that democratic institutions must be protected for the benefit of present and future generations.
According to him, the survival of democracy depends on citizens’ commitment to preserving institutions rather than advancing individual interests.
“Each time we come, we take a position that is only expressive of our personal interests and desires. But we want the nation to grow and we want democracy in the country to continue to survive,” he said.
The legal practitioner noted that political office holders would eventually leave office, hence the need for democratic institutions to remain stronger and resilient.
“It is about democracy and it is about Nigeria. It is not about individuals because they will do whatever they want, and get out of office one day, but the country remains,” Mato said.
He warned against actions capable of weakening democratic structures, saying the country’s founding fathers fought for independence to build a nation that would endure beyond the interests of any individual or group.
“Where were they when our forefathers fought for Nigeria’s independence? It is not all about you, this person or that person,” he said.
The SAN also called on Nigerians to consider the legacy they would leave for future generations.
“What will the children who are still growing, and those yet unborn, come and meet in the Nigerian political space?” he queried.
He urged political actors and citizens to embrace patriotism, accountability and respect for democratic principles, warning that allowing personal ambitions to override national interest could undermine national development.
“The earlier we understand this, the better. We should bury our different personal interests and focus on what is best for the country,” he said.
Mato maintained that a sustainable democracy requires collective responsibility and vigilance in defending democratic values to ensure continued national progress. (NAN)
